I wrote this article about data visualization for the “Presentation Guru” website a few years back, but it’s just as relevant today as it was then. So I thought I’d share it with you.
Visual communication has been around since cavemen painted on walls in prehistoric times.
Even today we say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” But why is it, then, that in business we so often choose a thousand words and numbers instead of an elegant picture?
There was a time when we didn’t have so much information at our fingertips or the means to analyze it every which way. Perhaps the decision-makers of the past could grasp the meaning of the limited data they had and make decisions based on it with relative ease.
Today there is so much more data available that it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Decision-makers at all levels of a business now need a way to make sense of complex data and to make data-informed decisions. And that’s where data visualization comes into the picture.
Data visualization combines analytics, aesthetics, and psychology to present data in a way that is immediately comprehensible and meaningful. It uses modern tools to connect today’s complex information with our deep-rooted affinity for visual meaning.
